Today is National Tater Day so get your potato on!
March 31 marks National Tater Day which is observed annually on this day. They saved the best for last by celebrating this wonderful vegetable on the last day of this month.
This day is set aside to celebrate the potato which is loved by almost everyone. In fact, there are numerous ways to enjoy the potato: baked, boiled, roasted, mashed, fried, hash browns, dumplings and more! There are actually over 4000 potato varieties.
In honor of Tater Day, Benton, Kentucky, throws a huge festival which originated in 1843. It was celebrated at the time of year that people would trade sweet potatoes for slips. You may not know this, but it is the oldest trade in the United States.
Tater Day typically is celebrated with carnival rides, games, potato eating contests and the largest potato contest which attracts the biggest potatoes nationally. There is even a parade!
