Disney remains at the top of the weekend box office after Beauty and the Beast delivered a very strong second weekend. The film recorded the fourth largest second weekend of all-time with $90.4 million.
Beauty and the Beast has now grossed $319 million domestically after only 10 days. It is already the highest grossing film of 2017 and continues the successful live action remakes for Disney reports Box Office Mojo.
Power Rangers came in second place with an impressive $40.3 million opening. The popular franchise from the '90s showed that they still have a solid following and it will be interesting to see how the film continues to perform. I predict the film will finish around the $120-$130 million domestic range.
Kong: Skull Island fell to third place with $14.7 million and has crossed $130 million domestically. The new sci-fi thriller Life debuted in fourth place with $12.5 million. This was slightly under the projections and I’m predicting around $50 million domestically for this film.
Logan rounds out the top five with $10.3 million and has passed $200 million domestically after 24 days. It is now the second highest grossing film of 2017. Get Out brought in $8.9 million and is approaching $150 million domestically.
The other wide release of the weekend was CHiPS, the film based on the popular TV show from the late '70s and early '80s. It struggled to find an audience and only brought in $7.7 million and finished in seventh place.
The Lego Batman Movie crossed $170 million domestically while Rogue One: A Star Wars Story crossed $530 million domestically after 101 days.
I think Beauty and the Beast has an excellent chance to win the box office again next weekend as it faces competition from the animated film Boss Baby and the sci-fi thriller Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson.
