The success story of British singer-songwriter Lewis Watson seems like one that could only occur in a digital age. First gaining exposure from posting covers on his YouTube channel at the young age of 16, Watson quickly acquired a base of eager fans from all over the world. His gentle voice demonstrates an innate talent and though he’s admitted to never taking guitar lessons, his natural affinity for the instrument is as impressive as any trained arts school student’s. Watson’s brand new album midnight explores a newfound maturity and range, proving the three years since his debut album was released were well-spent.

Recorded in just two weeks, midnight is a beautiful continuation of Watson’s earliest works. Working with London-based independent label Cooking Vinyl, whose clients include other well-known acoustic stars like Passenger and City and Colour, Watson was able to take a more personal, introspective approach to his second LP. The album shows a marked improvement in song structure and lyricism, making use of a live band instead of just Watson’s stripped-down acoustic guitar.

Singles “little light” and “deep the water” are immediate standouts, each showing a different side to Watson as a growing artist. “little light” might come as a bit of a surprise for fans of Watson’s debut album; there are moments of high-powered percussion contrasted beautifully with the poetic verses. A polished version of “la song” is another standout moment for the young singer-songwriter. The track first appeared as a demo on the extended version of the morning in 2014, but the reinvented cut is the perfect addition to this collection of new songs.

The subtle adaptations Lewis Watson has made to his pleasantly laidback sound over the last three years prove he is an artist to keep a keen eye on. Be sure to catch Lewis on tour this spring!
