Actress Darlene Cates, known for her role as Leonardo DiCaprio's and Johnny Depp's mother in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, died on Sunday, March 26, in her sleep.  She was 69.

Cates' sister, Sheri Cates Morgan, revealed the news on her Facebook page the following day.  She posted a heartfelt tribute to her sister, seen below.

Cates is known for her role in the iconic film What's Eating Gilbert Grape with Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp.

She was discovered for the movie after she appeared on the show "Too Heavy To Leave Their House" in 1985.  On the show, she discussed how a pelvic infection made her gain close to 150 pounds and how she continued to struggled with her obesity.  She was offered the role after the episode aired, as reported by People.

Cates also appeared on the TV shows Picket Fences and Touched by an Angel.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Cates' family and friends at this time.
