Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had no problem winning the weekend box office with a very impressive domestic gross of $145 million.

The opening weekend was a 54 percent increase of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy which brought in $94.3 million during its opening weekend reports Box Office Mojo. It is the seventh film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to have a domestic opening weekend of over $100 million. It also delivered the second highest opening weekend of the year, only behind Beauty and the Beast.

The Fate of the Furious fell to second place after spending almost a month in first place. The film brought in $8.5 million and has now passed $200 million domestically. It will not catch up to Furious 7’s domestic gross but it will pass Fast Five and will get close to passing Fast and Furious 6’s domestic gross.

The Boss Baby actually moved up a spot to third place with $6.2 million and is closing in on $160 million domestically after 38 days. How to Be a Latin Lover dropped two spots to fourth place with $5.3 million.

Beauty and the Beast rounds out the top five with $4.9 million as the film is approaching $500 million domestically. It is also the eleventh highest grossing worldwide release of all time.

The Circle continues to decline finishing in sixth place with $4 million and has only grossed $15.7 million domestically. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion dropped four spots to seventh place with $3.2 million.

Gifted ($2.1 million), Going in Style ($1.9 million) and Smurfs: The Lost Village ($1.8 million) round out the rest of the top 10.

I predict that the Guardians will remain at the top of the box office next weekend as they face off against two new wide releases, including King Arthur: Legend of the Sword starring Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law.
