While Stephen Colbert's studio audience laughed during his monologue on Monday night's show and some praised him for blasting Donald Trump, there were many who found one joke in particular to be completely out of line. And those who felt it was "homophobic" made their voices heard by calling Colbert out via Twitter.

As we reported, Colbert slammed the president following the his interview with fellow CBS employee John Dickerson on Face the Nation with a slew of insults. The joke that had the Twitterverse crying foul was when the Late Show host said of Trump, “The only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c**k holster.”

A social media firestorm then erupted as people dragged the comedian and started the trending #FireColbert hashtag.

On Wednesday, May 3, Colbert responded to the controversy at the start of his show.

“Welcome to The Late Show, I’m your host Stephen Colbert. Still? Am I still the host?” he began the broadcast before proclaiming, “I’m still the host!”

He then went on to address the joke that caused the uproar head on, but did not apologize for it.

“Now folks, if you saw my monologue Monday, you know that I was a little upset with Donald Trump for insulting a friend of mine," he stated. "So, at the end of that monologue, I had a few choice insults for the president in return. I don’t regret that. I believe he can take care of himself. I have jokes; he has the launch codes. So, it’s a fair fight.”

Colbert added that if he had a chance to do Monday's monologue all over again he would and would only change some of his word choices.

“While I would do it again, I would change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be,” he said. “I’m not going to repeat the phrase. But I just want to say, for the record, life is short and anyone who expresses their love in their own way, is to me an American hero. I think we can all agree on that. I hope even the president and I can agree on that. Nothing else. But, that.”
