After scrubbing her social media channels, then dropping cryptic hints in the form of snake videos, Taylor Swift announced the release of her sixth studio album, reputation this week. The album isn’t set to drop until November 10, but in the meantime, Swift released reputation’s first single, “Look What You Made Me Do.”
In comparison to previous songs, “Look What You Made Me Do,” is darker and more biting, and Swift’s anger directed at an unnamed betrayer—presumably Kanye West—is palpable in lyrics like, “I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red underlined/I check it once, then I check it twice.”
Coupled with an eerie melody that quickly takes a sinister turn, “Look What You Made Me Do” shows another side of Swift, one that’s tougher and thirstier for revenge; she is done being abused by both opportunists and critics alike.
Swift’s new single was co-written with Jack Antonoff of fun. and Bleachers fame. The single also samples a snippet of Right Said Fred’s mega-hit, “I’m Too Sexy.”
Following the release of the single, Swift posted a preview of the music video for “Look What You Made Me Do” on social media.
The video is slated to premiere during the 2017 Video Music Awards on Sunday.
