Step aside HBO and Netflix, Hulu came to play this year.
Hulu’s dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale won big at the Emmy Awards, held on Sept. 17, taking home five separate awards. This is a record breaking number of wins for the streaming site, as Hulu has never had a reoccurring Emmy winning show until now.

The show won awards for best drama series, best actress in drama series (Elizabeth Moss), best supporting actress in a drama series (Ann Dowd), best writing in a drama series (Bruce Miller) and best directing in a drama series (Reed Morano). Total, the show received thirteen nominations and also picked up three Creative Arts Emmy Awards the week prior.
This is a huge win for Hulu as the online streaming service has constantly been trying to keep up with the power-houses of Netflix and HBO. Many of Netflix’s show Stranger Things lost awards to The Handmaid’s Tale. Regardless, Emmy night turned out to be a big win for streaming sites everywhere — once again showing that this golden age of television we’re in primarily lives online — as Netflix still came out with four awards themselves.
“This is an incredible night for Hulu and The Handmaid’s Tale,” said Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins in an email to CNN. “We’re so proud and grateful that this groundbreaking story has made Emmys history!”

The Handmaid’s Tale is a show created by Bruce Miller and tells the story of a corrupt government creating new social classes that forces women to be repeatedly subjugated and mistreated.
Given that The Handmaid’s Tale was so successful in its first season alone, with a second season having been ordered last May, it’s likely this won’t be the last time we see Hulu at Emmy night.
