Twitter has recently been experimenting with upping the character limit on tweets from 140 to 280.
In a blog post from Product Manager Aliza Rosen, the company said: “We want every person around the world to easily express themselves on Twitter, so we’re doing something new: we’re going to try out a longer limit, 280 characters, in languages impacted by cramming (which is all except Japanese, Chinese and Korean).

Essentially the idea here is that the website doesn’t want you to feel cut off by the 140 character limit - if you have something to say, you should have more words to say it in. Which, on the one hand, is definitely going to be nice, because who of us hasn’t had to reduce their tweets down to the bare bones just to try and get across their point. On the other hand, the 140 character limit was a defining feature of the social media platform, and taking it away seems to defeat the purpose somewhat.

Currently, most people are still only given the 140 character option with a select few in a test group given the 280 option. However, Twitter is hopeful that the 280 will be the wave of the future for the website.
