Black Panther continues to dominate the box office as it remained the box office champion for the fourth consecutive weekend. This is something no other film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has accomplished.
The film brought in $41.1 million and now stands at $562 million domestically. It has become the second highest grossing superhero release of all-time and the seventh largest domestic release of all-time. The film is also a major success internationally as its international gross stands around $515.6 million and this means that the film has eclipsed $1 billion worldwide.
Disney also claimed the second spot this weekend as A Wrinkle in Time opened with $33.3 million. The film was met with mixed reviews and I think it will remain in the top five but it will be tough considering it is going up against Black Panther.
The Strangers: Prey at Night, the long-awaited sequel to 2008’s The Strangers opened in third place. The horror film brought in $10.2 million during its opening weekend. This is $10 million less than the original film’s opening weekend and I think this film might spend one more week inside the top five.
Red Sparrow dropped two spots to fourth place with $8.2 million. The film dropped 52% during its second weekend and I have a strong feeling that this film will not spend another week inside the top five.
Game Night rounds out the top five with $7.9 million. The film’s domestic gross stands around $45 million and the film is also approaching a worldwide gross of $70 million. I think this film will finish around $60 million domestically.
The other two new wide releases had less than stellar openings. The Hurricane Heist opened in eighth place with $3.1 million. I can honestly say I have no desire to watch this movie. Gringo failed to open within the top ten. Gringo opened in eleventh place with $2.6 million.
Peter Rabbit ($6.8 million), Death Wish ($6.6 million), Annihilation ($3.2 million) and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ($2.8 million) round out the top ten this weekend. Jumanji remains in the top ten for the twelfth straight week. Jumanji is approaching $400 million domestically. A very impressive accomplishment for a film that opened back in December.
Black Panther is looking to win the box office for a fifth straight weekend. It will face some tough competition from Warner Bros. reboot of Tomb Raider, starring Alicia Vikander.
