In a since-removed tweet, Planned Parenthood affiliate in Pennsylvania called for a Disney Princess who's had an abortion.
The tweet reads, "We need a disney princess who's had an abortion/We need a disney princess who's pro-choice/We need a disney princess who's an undocumented immigrant/ We need a disney princess who's actually a union worker/We need a disney princess who's trans."
The post was shared by Planned Parenthood Keystone in Pennsylvania. The commentary caused massive online rage and has since been removed.
In a statement released by company President and CEO Melissa Reed expressed what the company was trying to convey with the tweet:
"Today, we joined an ongoing Twitter conversation about the kinds of princesses people want to see in an attempt to make a point about the importance of telling stories that challenge stigma and championing stories that too often don’t get told. Upon reflection, we decided that the seriousness of the point we were trying to make was not appropriate for the subject matter or context, and we removed the tweet."
Planned Parenthood as a whole stands behind the message, but this particular tweet was by the affiliate in Pennsylvania. The statement refers to multiple issues facing communities in America, but the main focus of the backlash remains on the abortion aspect.
Pictures remain on the internet and many are expressing their hatred of the tweet.
The tweet draws from the popular meme where people express what kind of Disney princess the world needs to see and does also comment on other types of princesses needed, including ones who are undocumented or a union worker.
