The actress is accused of luring women into the cult NXIVM.
Allison Mack, the actress known for her roles in Smallville and Wilfred, has been arrested and charged with sex trafficking. Federal prosecutors have said she worked closely with a man who posed as a self-improvement guru but was a cult-like slave "master."
The indictment was issued Friday in Brooklyn. Mack appeared in court later in the day.
The organization, called NXIVM, was lead by Keith Raniere. Mack reportedly lured women in by convincing them that it acted as a female mentorship and empowerment group.
Prosecutors say she then exploited the recruited women and required them to engage in sexual activities with Raniere.
The acts required of them went as far as branding the women, forcing them to pose for nude photos, and keeping them on malnourished diets. One of the slaves become so thin and sleep-deprived that she stopped getting periods.
Raniere, 57, was arrested in Mexico and brought to the U.S. on March 26. He is being held in Brooklyn without bail.
Raniere's NXIVM started falling apart when Sarah Edmondson came out and shared her experiences with The New York Times in October.
Mack's Smallville co-star Kristen Kreuk also said she was once involved with the organization. She states she left before any nefarious or illegal activity began.
Mack and Raniere both face a 15-year sentence with a maximum of life imprisonment.
