The park is open again and the dinosaurs had no problem winning the weekend box office. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom delivered a roaring opening of $150 million at the domestic box office.
The sequel to the 2015 blockbuster Jurassic World didn’t pass the $208 million opening of the original but still looks like it is going to be a box office success. The film has already had success at the international box office. The film has brought in over $560 million dollars at the international box office and currently has a worldwide box office gross of $711 million.
This is the first time since 2007 that two different films opened with $100 million consecutively. The last time this happened was when Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End opened with $114.7 and the next weekend Shrek the Third opened with $121.6. I’m curious to see if Fallen Kingdom can maintain success at the box office and if it can reach or get close to the $652 million domestic gross of the original film.
Incredibles 2 dropped to second place but still delivered a very impressive second weekend. The film did drop 55 percent but still brought in $81 million. The film has brought in $350 million domestically after only ten days in release. It is the fourth largest Pixar release of all-time. The worldwide gross for this film stands around $485 million.
Ocean’s 8 dropped to third place with $11.7 million and just crossed $100 million domestically. I’m impressed with the way this film has been able to cross $100 million domestically. I don’t think the film will remain in the top five after this weekend.
Tag dropped one spot to fourth place with $8.2 million. I personally saw this film this past week and thought it was hilarious. The film just crossed $30 million domestically and it was a fun film and definitely worth some good laughs.
Deadpool 2 rounds out the top five again with $5.3 million and raises its total domestic gross to $304 million. Deadpool 2 also becomes the third Marvel film this year to cross $300 million domestically this year. The film also crossed $700 million at the worldwide box office.
Solo: A Star Wars Story crossed $200 million domestically while Avengers: Infinity War just passed $670 million domestically. It’s going to be close but I still think Infinity War is going to pass Black Panther at the domestic box office.
Hereditary ($3.8 million), Superfly ($3.4 million) and Won’t You Be My Neighbor ($1.9 million) round out the rest of the top ten.
I expect Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will win the box office again but it will face competition from Scario: Day of the Soldado when it opens next weekend.
