It's been a long time coming.
Marvel has long prided themselves on having characters that most people could relate to.
That may not have always been actually true, as it took this long for Black Panther to be released and Captain Marvel is still seven months away.
There is good news though — according to Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has announced the MCU will at long last be including LGBT+ characters.
More specifically, he said that two characters will be LGBT+ and that one of them has already appeared in past films.
The exact quote came from an interview with Gregory Ellwood of The Playlist, when he answered “yes” to the question: “When are we getting a gay, bi, LGBTQ or out character in the MCU? Is that even in the works?”
Feige was then asked if it would be a new or familiar character, to which he responded: “Both…Both ones you’ve seen and ones you haven’t seen.”
There hasn’t been any announcement who, specifically, those characters are, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from speculating.
One popular theory is that it's Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, who appeared in Thor: Ragnarok. On Twitter, Thompson announced that Valkyrie was bisexual, even though that wasn’t portrayed during the film.
While two characters still aren’t all that many — especially when you look at just how many people show up in these Marvel movies — and this certainly should have happened a long, long time ago, the studio is at least moving in a forward direction and that’s a good thing.
A good thing that’s sure to upset a lot of the single-minded audience members out there, so get ready for a lot of scathing criticism and Twitter debates from some old-timers.
Let’s just hope that Feige and the rest of Marvel actually see this through and that it comes sooner rather than later.
