Mission: Impossible—-Fallout won the weekend box office and delivered a new record for the action franchise.
Fallout brought in $61.5 million during its opening weekend. This is the largest opening for the franchise, topping the $57.8 opening of Mission: Impossible II back in 2000. This is also the second largest opening for a Tom Cruise film, only behind the $64.8 million opening of War of the Worlds back in 2005.
The film also brought in $92 million internationally during its opening weekend and it’s safe to say this is the best opening worldwide for any film in the franchise. This is the last major summer blockbuster so the film should have continued success at the box office.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! remained in second place after only dropping 57 percent during its second weekend. The film brought in $15 million and has reached $70 million domestically. It still has a way to go to reach $100 million domestically and it looks like it will be tough to top the original’s $144.1 million.
The Equalizer 2 dropped two spots to third place with $14 million. The sequel took a 61 percent drop during its second weekend and just reached $65 million domestically. I’m predicting that the film will finish just shy of $100 million domestically.
Hotel Transylvania 3 dropped one spot to fourth place with $12.3 million and is approaching $120 million domestically. It is less than $30 million away from passing the original’s gross and $50 million away from reaching the second film’s domestic gross.
Teen Titans Go! To The Movies opened in fifth place with $10.5 million. This opening was a bit lower than expectations but with a budget of just $10 million, this helps to make up for the lower opening and the film should finish in the $30-$40 million range domestically.
Ant-Man and the Wasp dropped two spots to sixth place with $8.4 million and just crossed $180 million domestically. The film just passed the original Ant-Man and Thor at the box office to become the 16th largest release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Incredibles 2 crossed $570 million at the domestic box office and it is soon to be the 36th film in history to reach $1 billion worldwide. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom came in eighth place with $6.8 million and is approaching $400 million domestically.
Skyscraper ($5.4 million) and The First Purge ($2.2 million) round out the rest of the top ten. Unfriended: Dark Web fell out of the top ten during its second weekend and finished in eleventh place with $1.5 million and stands just under $8 million domestically.
I think Fallout has a good chance to remain box office champion as it faces competition from four new wide release including The Spy Who Dumped Me starring Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon.
