Wands at the ready!
The new trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald debuted yesterday, promising new villains and old favorites for the series, along with more figures that once populated Harry Potter’s Wizarding history books.
In the trailer, we get healthy glimpses of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) forging an alliance with Jude Law’s Albus Dumbledore. We also see Johnny Depp as the villain Grindelwald, a sort of proto-Voldemort with a similar agenda of enacting Muggle subservience who was once a close friend of Dumbledore’s.
We also see Zoë Kravitz as Leta Lestrange, ancestor of Bellatrix Lestrange and Newt’s former flame who’s now engaged to Theseus Scamander, Newt’s brother. We got a hint of Newt’s lingering feelings for her in the original movie, and this trailer promises to dive more deeply into their past. We also get a hint of Brontis Jodorowsky’s Nicolas Flamel, inventor of the Sorcerer’s Stone.
The trailer also brings with it plenty of mysteries and the return of our old friends from the first Fantastic Beasts movie. Katherine Waterston returns as Tina Goldstein, the no-nonsense MACUSA Auror, along with Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Tina’s sweet sister and a skilled Legilimens (mind-reader).
And then, bafflingly enough, we see Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, the Muggle who had his memory of his Wizarding friends erased, along with Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone, who had died at the end of Fantastic Beasts. Well, apparently not. Jacob and Credence were two standouts of the original film; however it happened, I’m happy to welcome them back!
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald premieres November 16.
