The official trailer for The Purge TV series dropped yesterday in preparation for the September 4 premiere.
We have seen plenty of Purges in the last few years, including the fourth Purge movie (The First Purge, in theaters now). The 10-episode television series is another take on the night of the Purge, a 24-hour period of time where all crime is legal.
The trailer features, among the weird masks that have become a staple of every piece of Purge content, introduces us to Miguel, played by Gabriel Chavarra, who wants to rescue his sister Penelope, played by Jessica Garza, from “being Purged.” Whatever that is, it doesn’t sound good, and the cultish trimmings in the trailer aren’t a good sign.
We also see a boss ask the high-up employees of his corporation to work on Purge night, all while listening to a radio host praise the catharsis of the Purge.
It’s a fascinating concept that has spawned four movies, so concept-fatigue might be setting in (looking at you, Marvel), but television has the flexibility and time to build a really complicated, layered story. It’s something new for the Purge.
