Supergirl is getting ready to make her big screen debut.
Warner Bros. has announced that a feature-length Supergirl movie is now in development over at DC films, coming from screenwriter Oren Uziel.
Uziel is best known for penning the script for 22 Jump Street and The Cloverfield Paradox (ugh), and he’s also working on the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
Supergirl, for those who might be unfamiliar with the character, is Superman’s older cousin who also makes her way to earth after Krypton is destroyed. She spent the first couple years of her comic-book run under Kal-El’s wing, but eventually became popular enough to launch her own spin-off series in 1972.
Supergirl was originally made into a movie back in 1984, starring Helen Slater in the lead role. There is also a Supergirl show that’s about to start its fourth season over at CW.
As I say with every article that I write when DC announces a new film, it’s probably best to take this with a grain of salt. DC still hasn’t figured out how, exactly, to handle their cinematic universe. Instead of trying to tie everything together, they’re just announcing new movies left and right to see what sticks.
That being said, those movies can sometimes get fast-tracked — like the upcoming Joker movie, now set for 2019 — so there’s still a chance this will see the light of day.
While I still find it absolutely ridiculous we can’t get a Man of Steel 2 before a Supergirl movie (DC has absolutely no idea how to handle the character of Superman anymore), this still sounds like a pretty intriguing project. I’ll be more excited once we have a director and star announced, but maybe this will become their next Wonder Woman.
