The top four girls on American Idol had one purpose after this week: to go home. No, not as in being eliminated from the competition, but as in being able to participate in the show’s famous hometown visit the top three get to make. Going home for good this week was Amber Holcomb, but given her sad demeanor on Wednesday and that she was in the bottom two last week, it’s not all that shocking, not even to her. Still, she had an emotional sendoff that had her full out crying and unable to finish her last performance.

Before we get to how the girls ranked, let’s take a look at what Jimmy Iovine had to say about the contestants and their two performances this week:

Angie Miller: “Angie had opportunity to shut the entire contest down this week. She had the opening slot, she did great last week, she sung “Diamonds” by Rihanna. It just wasn’t the song she needed it to be. She tried to take this song somewhere where the bones of the song just didn’t have enough meat on them. As for the second song, it just wasn’t special enough. But it wasn’t bad enough to send her home.”

Amber Holcomb: “You always run the risk when singing contemporary songs of sounding karaoke. And last night I’m afraid amber did. She’s a great singer with the wrong song. It could have been the right song had she had more time to prepare for it. It’s a fabulous vocal on that record. I just don’t think Amber had the time … Just when you think amber is in a bit of trouble, she digs down deep and does something magnificent. “Funny Valentine” is a beautiful, beautiful song and Amber crushed it. She was in the bottom two last week, she has a lot of ground to make up for in the voting. Was this enough to saver her? I don’t know, but I sure hope so.”

Candice Glover: “If I were Bruno Mars, I’d go write a song for Candice’s album right now. She did a magnificent job on both songs. It wasn’t the best she’s done but she was head and shoulders above the rest.”

Kree Harrison: “In my opinion, Kree just hasn’t lived up to her full potential over the last two weeks. I must admit, she did well on both songs. But some contestants did poor on both songs and really great on the other. I think I prefer that over two good performances. I think that’s going to hurt her this week.”

So did the viewers agree with Iovine? Ryan Seacrest says that, in no particular order, Miller and Glover are safe. This means Harrison joins Holcomb in the bottom, but obviously Holcomb is the one that is ultimately sent home.

Like any other Idol results show, the night also featured many performances. The girls took the stage to perform “Crazy In Love,” while Season 7 winner David Cook also performed his new single “Lay Me Low.”

Next week we'll see the top three return to their hometowns, and if past years are any indication, it's sure to be filled with a lot of tears along with a lot of excitement.
