Academy Award winners and nominees headline the new films hitting theaters this week. In the most star-studded releases, a killer and a super hero with alter egos go to great lengths to protect the ones they love.

A terrorist wreaks havoc on Tony Stark’s life in Iron Man 3. As he battles his powerful enemy to save his loved ones, Stark is forced to put technology to the side and instead put his faith in his instincts and skills. This third film in the action/adventure series runs for two hours and twenty minutes. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Guy Pearce. The PG-13 film is playing in 2D, 3D and IMAX theaters.

A doting father and husband hides his secret life as a cold-blooded killer in The Iceman. Based on real events, the crime thriller tells the story of 1980’s contract killer Richard Kuklinski who worked for the mob and killed over 100 people during his career unbeknownst to his family. The one hour and forty-five minute limited released film stars Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder, Chris Evans, Ray Liotta, David Schwimmer, Stephen Dorff and James Franco. It’s rated R for violence, language and sex.

Keanu Reeves stars in generation Um…. Set in New York City, the limited released drama reveals the opinions and secrets of two young women as they vie for the attention of a video camera held by their friend. The one hour and thirty-seven minute film is rated R for sex, drugs and language.

Looking to step out of the shadow of his folk singer father, an aspiring musician gets his break by singing his father’s songs at a tribute concert in Greetings from Tim Buckley. The estranged father and son story is told simultaneously through the use of flashbacks as Jeff Buckley prepares to take the stage at the famous St. Ann’s concert. The unrated, one hour and thirty-nine minute biopic stars Penn Badgley and Imogen Poots. It’s playing in limited theaters.

A birthday trip becomes an intervention in Caroline and Jackie. After years apart, Caroline visits her sister and boyfriend, but the meeting’s agenda quickly turns around as those trying to help Jackie with her addiction start to realize that they are the ones with the issues. The one hour and twenty-four minute drama is unrated. It’s available in limited theaters.

A man, recently released from jail, struggles between returning to the mob and living on the straight and narrow in Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn. Once he chooses a side, reality begins to stare him in the face. The limited released drama stars William DeMeo, Armand Assante, Cathy Moriarty, Ice T and Ja Rule. The film runs for one hour and fifty-six minutes. It’s rated R for language and nudity.

A wealthy man puts on an opera at his estate to impress his friends and hit on the conductor in 1st Night. While preparing to perform Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte, the group begins to live out the music through budding and failing relationships. The unrated comedy is playing in limited theaters for one hour and forty-five minutes.

A man searches for answers about his wife’s secret life in The Attack. The limited released film is an adaptation of Yasmina Khadra’s novel about an Arab surgeon, living in Tel Aviv, on a mission to uncover the truth about why his wife set out to destroy innocent lives as a suicide bomber. The one hour and forty-two minute film is rated R for violence, language and sex.

Go beneath the sheets and peek into the lives of sixteen famous porn stars with Aroused. While posing for a photo shoot with director Deborah Anderson, the adult film stars reveal little known details about their private lives and how they got to where they are today. The unrated documentary plays for one hour and thirteen minutes. It’s available in limited theaters.

The French film Something in the Air, is a best screenplay winner from the 2012 Venice Film Festival. Set in 1968, the limited released drama shows the angst of a teen growing up amid political unrest while trying to separate himself through the arts. The unrated, two hour and two minute film has English subtitles.

The history behind a popular Mexican holiday is portrayed in Cinco de Mayo La Batalla. The two hour and five minute drama is set to the backdrop of the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when Mexicans fought off the unstoppable French army. Despite death and destruction surrounding them, two young Mexicans are able to find love. The limited released Spanish drama runs for two hours and five minutes. It’s rated R for violence and language.

Iron Man 3 moviegoers will want to keep their 3D glasses handy for next week’s big release. The highly anticipated film, The Great Gatsby, is making its way into 3D theaters on May 10.
