Disney is still planning on a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which already has a release date, even though a director hasn’t been hired yet. That could change soon, though, since the studio has reportedly narrowed down the field to a few candidates.

Deadline reported Thursday that since Disney and Johnny Depp have finished work on The Lone Ranger, they can start working on bringing Jack Sparrow back to the big screen. The site lists three potential candidates for the director’s chair.

First is Fredrik Bond, the director from Norway who made The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman with Shia LaBeouf and Evan Rachel Wood. He is a favorite for producer Jerry Bruckheimer, although Charlie Countryman is his only feature experience.

The other option is the team behind Kon-Tiki, Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. That film was a critical hit and nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. It was released in US theaters last month.

While there is buzz around that team, a wild card could be Rupert Sanders, who is available since he’s not doing the Snow White and the Huntsman sequel.

Disney hopes to start production later this year. Back in January, the studio scheduled it for a July 10, 2015 release. Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can) was hired to do the script.

Rob Marshall’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides made $1 billion worldwide.

Depp will be back on the big screen in The Lone Ranger on July 3. He’s also been linked to Disney’s Into The Woods musical.
