Crackle held its NewFront presentation for advertisers in New York today, announcing that Jerry Seinfeld’s Webby Award-winning online series Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee has earned a second season. The site has also greenlit its first digital exclusive movies, including a sequel to David Spade’s Joe Dirt.
Comedians debuted last summer and featured Seinfeld with friends like Larry David and Ricky Gervais going to a coffee shop in one of his rare cars. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Sony-owned Crackle has given Seinfeld the OK to do a new season that will feature Sarah Silverman, David Letterman and Chris Rock. Don Rickles will also participate in an episode.
Variety reports that a new series starring David Arquette was also announced. It is titled Cleaners and Arquette will play an FBI agent. “I like that it’s backed by Sony,” he said about Crackle at the event. “They know what they are doing. And it won’t be canceled after a couple of episodes.”
Play It Forward, a documentary series that features A-list celebrities doing street performances, was also announced, as were new seasons for The Bannen Way and Chosen.
Crackle will also have two exclusive films produced just for the site. Danny Glover and John Foo star in Extraction, while Spade returns as Joe Dirt. The original film was released in 2001 by Sony and grossed $27 million domestically.
“Crackle is for the new living room," Eric Berger, executive vice president of digital networks at Sony Pictures Television and GM of Crackle, told the crowd. “It's programmed, it's everywhere and its easily accessible. We're not a content aggregator but a programmer much like a cable network.”
