Rare footage of The Smiths performing with Morrissey after he left the band for a solo career surfaced online.

The gig was at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on December 22, 1988. The show took place exactly 365 days after the frontman last worked with the band.

“Morrissey (or rather his lawyer) phoned Marr, [Mike] Joyce and [Andy] Rourke and suggested a gig. The result was a triumphant experience for all concerned, with feverish members of the audience gaining admission with a Smiths or Morrissey T-Shirt,” a feature from Uncut explains.

Only fans wearing a Smiths or Morrissey T-Shirt were allowed into the show, which was announced by John Peel’s radio show. Craig Gannon replaced Johnny Marr on guitar that evening.

The band opened with “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before,” and the 40-minute long set also included some of Morrissey solo tracks such as “Suedehead” and “Sister I’m A Poet,” NME reported.

They also played songs they’d recorded with Morrissey a year earlier including, “The Last Of The Famous International Playboys” as well as songs The Smiths never played live.
