Now that Jurassic Park 4 isn’t coming out in June 2014 as Universal hoped, Sony has swooped in to take the film’s slot for 21 Jump Street 2.
Last month, Sony set the sequel to the surprise Channing Tatum/Jonah Hill 2012 comedy hit for June 6, 2014. That meant it would have had to go up against the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot that Michael Bay is producing for Paramount. It would have also only given 21 Jump Street 2 a week before JP4.
However, Universal said yesterday that JP4 will not come out on June 13, 2014 as they hoped. The studio is giving director Colin Trevorrow more time and did not announce a new date. Trevorrow is inexperienced with big-budget tentpoles, having only directed the indie comedy Safety Not Guaranteed.
Just hours later, Deadline confirmed that Sony decided to push back 21 Jump Street 2 so it currently has the date to itself.
21 Jump Street 2 is expected to reunite Hill and Tatum with directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Sony recently hired Oren Uziel to do some rewrites on the script before he starts work on Men in Black 4.
21 Jump Street grossed $200 million worldwide last year.
