Right as a film featuring two lesbian lovers (Blue Is The Warmest Color) won the top prize at Cannes Film Festival in France, citizens of the country are protesting the recent same-sex marriage law.
With the law having actual effect now, the demonstrators took the streets to show their frustrations with current President Francois Hollande, reported AP News.
Gawker reported that over 150,000 marchers gathered a parade along with a huge police presence in case of trouble from the far-right group.
The Independent reported that the demonstration ended in violence as men and women attacked riot police and camera crews with bottles, fireworks and flares.
According to NBC News, the protests started as a grassroots campaign built on their opposition with Hollande even though half of France support the law of same-sex marriage and adoption.
The protestors believe that the harm of the law will come from letting LGBT families adopt, saying it treads on the fundamental belief of every child having a mother and a father, reported The Independent.
Protestors held signs saying, “Every child must know the identity of its father and mother” and “No to a change of civilization.”
