Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband of the Queen, was taken to a London hospital Thursday for a planned operation on his abdomen.

The Duke, who has been Queen Elizabeth II’s consort for over 65 years, will undergo “an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement. He is expected to spend two weeks at the London Clinic, according to Reuters.

The operation is anticipated to take place on Friday, reports CNN.

Prince Philip, currently 91 years old, will celebrate his birthday on Monday.

The Duke appeared healthy and happy at a presentation on Thursday at the Palace, in which the Queen made him a member of the Order of New Zealand. He joked and laughed with guests, according to the Press Association.

Palace officials said there would be regular updates on his condition and urged the media to refrain from speculation.

In recent years, Prince Philip has had other health issues, including a bladder infection and a surgery to repair a blocked artery.

The Queen and Prince Philip celebrated the 60th anniversary of her coronation on Tuesday.
