Divergent, Lionsgate’s film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s novel, is getting an IMAX release next year, as the studio hopes that it will be its next success story like The Hunger Games.
Lionsgate announced today, ahead of the film’s Comic-Con panel this week, that the film will be re-mastered for the large screen format. According to Deadline, the studio said that the IMAX release will be worldwide on March 21, 2014.
The studio pulled a similar move with The Hunger Games last year, releasing the film in IMAX, even though IMAX cameras were not used on set. The one-week run kicked off The Hunger Games’ stunning box office success and the film went on to gross $408 million domestically.
Divergent provides Shailene Woodley with a starring role, similar to how Hunger Games was the breakout part for Jennifer Lawrence. It is still in production in Chicago and Kate Winslet recently spoke with USA Today about making the film while being pregnant.
Winslet plays the villain, Jeanine Matthews, in the film, which is part of a planned trilogy. “I'm holding up fine. I'm pregnant, but it's not at the point where it becomes impossible,” she said. “Sometimes you just have to roll with it.”
The film is being directed by Neil Burger, who will be at Comic-Con, along with members of the cast.
