Wednesday in Toledo, Ohio, a combination of heavy rain and sanitary and storm sewers caused southbound North Detroit Avenue to collapse in front of 60-year-old Pamela Knox. She watched as the car in front of her narrowly avoided the massive sinkhole, pictured below, but Knox was unable to stop her Chevy Malibu in time.
“It was just hard to believe that this was actually happening to me...As the car was falling, I just kept calling on the name of Jesus. I just kept saying 'Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,” Knox reported, according to NPR.org.
Within minutes, firefighters had lowered a ladder into the hole, and Knox emerged, shaken but apparently completely unharmed, a diagnosis later confirmed by a hospital visit. Meanwhile, crews were working to position a crane to pull out the car, writes the ToledoBlade.com. Mayor Mike Bell estimated 4-5 days’ work would patch the road up.
Sinkholes typically cause trouble in swampy areas or places prone to cycles of freezing, thawing, and heavy rains. Just 4 months ago TheCelebrityCafe.com reported on a sinkhole that opened in a house in Florida, killing a man.
