While Bob Dylan never stops making new music, occasionally he goes back in the vaults for a new edition of his Bootleg Series. It started in 1993 with a release featuring three volumes that only provided a small sample of his unreleased material. For the first new volume in three years, Dylan is going to one of his most controversial periods - 1969 to 1971 and focusing on the albums Self Portrait and New Morning.
The new release, titled The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), was announced on his website earlier this week and accompanied by a trailer. The album focuses mostly on the sessions that lead to the 1970 double album Self Portrait. It was critically despised at the time, with Rolling Stone’s Greil Marcus famously proclaiming “What is this sh*t?”
However, it was a commercial success and has been the subject of reappraisal from Dylan fans. It’s now seen as Dylan’s attempt to tear down that ‘voice of generation’ label from the early part of the 1960s. He succeeded brilliantly.
It was quickly followed by New Morning, which featured the single “If Not For You.” Another Self Portrait includes tracks from the sessions for both albums, along with some session takes from his acclaimed 1969 country album Nashville Skyline.
According to The Huffington Post, the new album cover features a new self portrait from Dylan.
Another Self Portrait is being released in a 2 CD set and a giant 4 CD box that will Dylan’s entire 1969 Isle of Wight performance with The Band. The first tracks from Another Self Portrait were released on a 7” single on Record Store Day in April.
Another Self Portrait is out on Aug. 27.
