This Saturday, July 20, marks the one-year anniversary of the tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado in which 24-year-old James Holmes burst into a midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, killing 12 and wounding 70.
For Eugene Han and Kirstin Davis, a young couple who survived the shooting, the date of that fateful night will be turned into a much happier memory, their own wedding day.
The couple had been dating for about two years when they decided to attend the midnight viewing of the long-anticipated film The Dark Knight Rises with three friends. Han, 21, noticed something was wrong when he saw James Holmes walk through the emergency exit door.
CNN reports that when Holmes started shooting, Han immediately pulled Davis, 22, down under the seats and protected her from the bullets, possibly saving her life. Han himself was shot in the knee and the hip.
When Holmes temporarily stopped shooting because his gun got jammed, the friends saw an opportunity to escape and made a breakthrough out the emergency exit door, carrying injured Han with them.
They were immediately taken to a local hospital where Davis and their three friends were treated for minor injuries. Han was treated and has been going to physical therapy for the past year, he was recently able to start running again.
Han, who proposed on April 9, says he thinks the terrifying night has brought them closer together.
"We were still dating and I was planning on proposing even before the shooting but I never had the chance to," Han said, according to ABC News. "When the theater shooting happened, that's when I was like, I really need to do this because you don't know what's going to happen after tomorrow."
He also said they would be sure to say a prayer at the wedding for the families who lost a loved one during the shooting.
