Lauryn Hill began her three month prison sentence Monday, July 8, after failing to pay nearly $1 million in taxes.
The Associated Press reports that Hill entered a federal prison in Danbury to begin her three month jail sentence. The former Fugees singer attempted to sway the courts back in May after paying $900,000 on the eve of her deadline, but a judge was unmoved by her attempts.
Hills failed to pay taxes in 2005, 2006 and 2007 as well as failing to pay state taxes in 2008 and 2009. The AP notes that her total damages owed exceed $2 million. At the time, Hill claimed that threats against her family made it impossible for her to pay her taxes.
Hill currently resides in a minimum security prison where she will be required to hold a job in housekeeping, maintenance or landscaping. Once she is released, Hill will be serve one year probation, three of which will be of house arrest.
