Audiences and Paramount Pictures will have to survive a year without Paranormal Activity. The studio announced today that the fifth film in the cheap horror franchise will be pushed back to January 2014.

According to Deadline, Paranormal Activity 5 will now not be in theaters until Jan. 5, 2014. Shortly after the fourth film continued the franchise’s success last fall, Paramount scheduled PA 5 for Oct. 25. Now, the film will have to settle for the second-best period for horror movies - January.

The news confirms a report from The Wrap on Tuesday. While the site said that no reason was given for the delay, a source told the site, “They really like the director, but they are second guessing themselves.”

PA 4 may have been the worst-performing film in the franchise, but the $5 million found-footage movie still grossed $140.8 million worldwide last year. The first three movies cost only $8 million to make combined, but they made $576 million worldwide in total. The franchise has been such a success that Paramount said that plans are in place for an untitled spin-off targeted to the Latino audience.

So what will be PA 5’s October replacement for Paramount? MTV Films’ Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.
