Just as we finally got Rebecca Black's annoyingly catchy tune, "gotta get down on Friday" stuck in our heads, it appears she is singing on YouTube again. No need to fear however. Instead of singing her own original and repetitive songs, Black covers an acoustic version of Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop."
Cyrus sings in the original version about doing lines in the bathroom, "girls with their big butts," and strip clubs. Black on the other hand toned down the lyrics to include "homegirls living it up" and people "acting like they know you." She is joined by fellow YouTube music sensation, Jon D, who she remarks is way better than Harry Styles.
The year-old knows a thing or two about being judged by people who don't actually know her. When Black's YouTube music video for "Friday" went viral, she receives death threats and wards of cyber bullies online. According to E! Online, the bullying was so bad at school, it lead her to withdraw and instead begin homeschooling.
Black told ABC's Nightline at the time that students mocked her in the hallways, persistently asking her what day it was while singing in nasal-like voices. "I've had a lot of experience with not being liked and all that," she said. "I think if I hadn't had to deal with that in the past then I totally would have handled this differently and I would have gone down in burning flames. But I've learned that you just can't let it get to you."
It's great that Black has found clarity and self-assurance despite the backlash of "haters." In the process she has also found a more mature sound.
Coincidence or not, Rebecca has and will continue to drop new cover songs ever, you guessed it… Friday.
