The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (UNFAO), has published an annual report known as the State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA), since 1947. For years, SOFA has listed the United States as the developed country with the highest obesity rate—but not anymore.
In the 2013 report, Mexico surpassed the U.S. rate of 31.8% obesity to 32.8% obesity, writes the HuffingtonPost. While there are less developed and developing nations with equal or worse obesity rates, the designation is a particular mark of shame for developed countries, which are viewed as having the resources to address the issue but failing to do so.
Notably, the U.S. obesity rate hasn’t decreased; Mexico has only surpassed it. What’s worse, according to Mexico's National Nutrition Institute physician Abelardo, is “The same people who are malnourished are the ones who are becoming obese,” probably as a result of price and availability, YahooNews.com reports.
