Caril Ann Clair, Charles Starkweather’s former girlfriend, was badly injured in a car accident in which her husband died.
Starkweather and Clair, then known as Caril Fugate, killed 11 people between 1957 and 1958. He was executed for his crimes. Caril was released from prison in 1976 after the Supreme Court ruled that life imprisonment for juveniles was unconstitutional.
The accident happened Monday night near Old 27 in Tekonsha Township on Interstate 69. The SUV veered off the road and rolled over.
Clair went to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment of her injuries.
“I am just devastated about this,” Attorney Linda Battisti told The Detroit Free Press , in reference to the accident.
Not everyone believes that Clair actually participated in the murders.
Battisti says that she has known Caril for years and described her as "resilient, courageous and a brave woman. I have always said I have been humbled in her presence. She is incredibly funny and very loving and very giving," she told the Associated Press .
Battisti wrote a book titled “The 12th Victim” about the case.
