Elizabeth Olsen, a darling in the indie film community, is reportedly in the running for a gig that would be guaranteed to raise her profile. The actress has been linked to the role of the Scarlet Witch in Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Sources for Bleeding Cool say that writer/director Joss Whedon’s first choice for the role was Saoirse Ronan, who recently starred in The Host and Hanna. But she turned the role down and Whedon is now looking at Olsen.
Olsen, the younger sister of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, has showed shown off her acting skills in the acclaimed indie Martha Marcy May Marlene and appeared in Liberal Arts and this year’s Kill Your Darlings. She’ll next be seen in Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake and the 2014 Godzilla reboot. But a role like the Scarlet Witch would bring her to another level of fame.
Bleeding cool notes that Olsen would have to take a “European” accent for the part.
This isn’t the only big news on theAvengers front today. Whedon also spoke with Entertainment Weekly to chat about Ultron and how he’ll be a bit different from the comic book character.
“I knew right away what I wanted to do with him,” Whedon explained. “He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. “ He said that Ultron will not have as many abilities as he has in the comics and he said that he is writing another character with magic who’s a witch. (That would be the Scarlet Witch.)
We have a while before we see how Whedon is handling Ultron, since Avengers 2 doesn’t hit theaters until May 2015.
