In a sudden end to a week-long manhunt, 16-year-old Hannah Anderson was rescued from the remote Idaho wilderness where her kidnapper, 40-year-old James Lee DiMaggio, had brought her from California. DiMaggio, a former friend of the Anderson family, is suspected of murdering Hannah mother and brother. He was fatally shot by an FBI agent during the rescue. No one else was injured.

After horseback riderstipped authorities off, 150 law enforcement officials descended upon Morehead Lake where DiMaggio and Hannah had been spotted, writes Reuters. Hannah was immediately airlifted to the hospital after DiMaggio was shot, but appeared in good health.
Authorities have declined to release details of the case, so it remains unclear how DiMaggio killed Hannah’s family, or how the rescue played out. But San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore told the LA Times “Obviously we would have liked Mr. DiMaggio to surrender and face justice in a court of law, but that was not the case.”
An FBI team will investigate the shooting while crisis counselors help Hannah, according to the AP, but circumstances remain unclear at this time. The horseback riders reported that Hannah behaved oddly, but not as if in distress, and her father has stated that he doesn’t recall seeing the “unusual infatuation” DiMaggio reportedly had with Hannah. Police have confirmed that the second body at the Andersons’ house was Hannah’s 8-year-old brother Ethan.
