The thought of Michelle Obama releasing a Hip Hop album, on the surface, seems like a joke. But when you look into it, it's a great idea by a woman with such a big influence on society. The album is being made to fight obesity in America.
The first lady's "Lets Move" foundation has teamed up with the Partnership For A Healthier America foundation and Hip Hop Public Health to release the 19 track album reports XXL.com. The album features big names like Ashanti, Ariana Grande, Travis Barker, Doug E. Fresh, Run DMC, and Jordin Sparks among others.
By some of the names of the songs you can clearly tell the message is to get Americans to be more active, and eat healthier. Some of the song names include "U R What You Eat" "Veggie Luv" and "We Like Vegetables.
As for why they chose to go the route of a Hip Hop album to raise awareness for obesity, Dr Olajide Williams, founder of Hip Hop Public Health said "Throughout history, music has been a great teacher and motivator, from ABC’s and nursery rhymes to religious hymns and national anthems. It is time to harness this power for health,” according to the Huffington Post.
The main target for this album is the African American community, because close to 50 percent of African American children are overweight according to a study done in 2011.
Michelle Obama won't be rapping on the album, but she will put her name on it, and that should help get this album heard, which should hopefully lead to awareness being raised on obesity. Along with the 19 tracks, the album will also feature ten videos. The album is set to release on September 30.
