Big time celebs head this week’s major releases. Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg team up in a new crime thriller while Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria star alongside little blue characters voiced by Katy Perry and George Lopez.
Smurfette is kidnapped and brought to Paris in Smurfs 2. In the sequel to the hit 2011 film, Gargamel creates Smurf-like creatures called “Naughties” which he thinks can give him the the Smurfs’ powers. To his dismay, only Smurfette knows the magical spell that can turn them into Smurfs. Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, Vanity, Patrick and Grace Winslow go on a mission to save her from the evil sorcerer. The PG live action animation stars Hank Azaria, Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays and features the voices of Katy Perry, George Lopez, Jonathan Winters, John Oliver, Anton Yelchin and Christina Ricci. The one hour and forty-five minute comedy is available in 2D and 3D theaters.

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg play undercover agents in a Mexican drug ring in 2 Guns. The two do not know that the other is undercover and working for the law. When they fail to get inside the cartel, they’re forced to go on the run and eventually find out their true identities. The crime thriller runs for one hour and forty-nine minutes. It’s rated R for violence, language and nudity.

Two brothers in 1970’s Australia chase waves in the surfer film Drift. With the help of their seamstress mother, they start a business making wetsuits and short boards. The company has a slow start, but picks up when local surfers become attracted to their products. Just as business starts to boom, the family receives opposition from townspeople with conservative values and a biker gang looking to take their profits. The limited released drama is based on real events and stars Sam Worthington, Myles Pollard and Xavier Samuel. The film runs for one hour and fifty-three minutes. It’s rated R for language and drugs.

A party animal high school student starts to change his ways when he falls for a quiet classmate in The Spectacular Now. The limited released coming of age film is written by the people behind 500 Days of Summer. The comedic drama plays for one hour and thirty-five minutes in limited theaters. It’s rated R for language, drugs and sex.

Astronauts search for life on one of Jupiter’s moons in Europa Report. The explorers are physically and mentally challenged on this deep space mission as equipment fails and they lose contact with their team on earth. The PG-13 sci-fi thriller runs for one hour and thirty minutes. It’s available in limited theaters.

The men behind some of the greatest jewelry heists of all time give their accounts on their crimes in Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers. The unrated documentary provides a look through the eyes of the detectives and the thieves themselves. The one hour and fifteen minute film is available in limited theaters.

Children have the chance to enjoy Smurfs 2 in 2D & 3D this weekend. On August 9, another animated film hits theaters in 3D, Disney’s Planes. Also debuting in theaters next weekend are Jennifer Aniston’s We’re the Millers, Matt Damon’s Elysium and the epic fantasy adventure Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
