Universal Studios is still looking to make another remake of Scarface and could make a very interesting choice for director. The studio is reportedly in talks with British director David Yates.

Deadline broke the news yesterday, reporting that Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter films, is in the last stages of negotiations with the studio.

The site notes that Universal is keep project development under wraps as it looks to get the script perfect. Universal knows that the original 1932 film, directed by Howard Hawks and Richard Rosson, and the 1983 reboot, directed by Brian De Palma, are iconic films, so they want to get the second reboot right. The studio is apparently “very high” on the new draft, Deadline’s source said.

When we last heard about the Scarface reboot, it was October 2012 and Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco, Quiz Show) had reportedly been brought in to re-write the script.

Similar to the 1983 version, written by Oliver Stone, Universal isn’t looking to remake Scarface. Instead, they want to update the story of an immigrant gangster’s rise and fall and pursuit of the American Dream.

Yates’ last film was the final Harry Potter movie and has been looking for his follow-up to that film. He was recently linked to a planned reboot of Tarzan for Warner Bros., but nothing has come of that project.
