Christoph Waltz is reportedly in talks to join Warner Bros.’ new Tarzan film that will be directed by David Yates.

Variety first reported the news, noting that it isn’t quite clear how Yates plans to make this new version of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ legendary king of the jungle. The publication notes that Waltz’ military role may be some kind of military man who meets Tarzan. the Hollywood Reporter adds that the character’s name would be Captain Rom, who is hoping to trap Tarzan so he can get diamonds in return.

It certainly sounds like the perfect nasty guy that the two-time Oscar winner can sink his teeth into.

Alexander Skarsgard is still on board to play Tarzan, but the studio has yet to find a Jane. There were rumors earlier this year that Jessica Chastain was being considered, but THR says that WB Margot Robbie or Emma Stone are possibilities.

Yates, who joined in November is still attached. It could be his first film since directing the final Harry Potter films. He is producing with Jerry Weintraub, Alan Riche and Mike Richardson. The script has been worked on several times, recently by Adam Cozad.

Variety notes that the studio still hasn't given the project the greenlight. They are waiting for Jane to be cast.

Waltz will be seen in The Zero Theorem. He is also attached to True Crimes. He won his Oscars for his supporting roles in Quentin Tarantino’s last two films, Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained.
