Lady Gaga came to Miley Cyrus’ defense during an interview airing on Bravo. Despite the hoards of criticism following Cyrus’ twerk-filled VMA performance, the “Applause” singer praised the former Disney star’s self-expression.
"I mean, I just think everybody needs to lighten up and leave her alone," Gaga said during the interview with Andy Cohen. The pop star went on to say that pop music allows for artistic expression, and Cyrus was just trying to explore hers.
“I give her props. You know, she's growing up in front of the entire world and maybe she's not so happy with stuff she did in her career when she was younger and she wants to be free, so let her do what she wants," Gaga told Cohen. Of course, Gaga is no stranger of doing what she wants. She famously wore a dress made of meat to the 2010 VMAs and arrived to the 2011 Grammys encapsulated in an egg.
Cyrus caused an uproar after her performance of “We Can’t Stop” during the MTV’s Video Music Awards in October. Cyrus was scantily clad in a nude bikini as she grinded and twerked on fellow performer, Robin Thicke.
Many criticized the performance for being overly sexual and provocative. EW reported that Martha MacCallum, co-anchor of Fox’s America’s Newsroom, said, “There’s only one place that you should see that kind of thing. And you should have to pay to get into the door and show your ID.”
