Despite the fan outrage, Tom Welling, a former Clark Kent, supports Ben Affleck’s casting as Batman in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel.

While at the Toronto Film Festival, Welling told E! News that Affleck’s casting as the Caped Crusader is great. “He’s a tremendous actor, he’s a wonderful director and I wish him the best,” Welling said to the site.

Welling played Clark Kent for ten years on Smallville and eventually became Superman in the show’s final episode. However, Welling’s not the only former superhero to approve Affleck as Batman.

Josh Brolin told the Huffington Post, “I want him to kick a** and I want everyone to love it and kind of eat their words.”

Brolin has experienced the difficulties of playing a superhero. He portrayed the titular vigilante in the poorly received film Jonah Hex. Zack Snyder, the director of Man of Steel 2, even approached Brolin for the part of Batman.

In the face of petitions and angry tweets, Affleck seems to have some support in the former superhero community.
