Can A Song Save Your Life?, which stars Keira Knightley, Adam Levine and Mark Ruffalo, will be distributed by The Weinstein Company. The film sparked a bidding war after its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival and TWC came out on top.
The film is directed by John Carney, the Irish director behind the acclaimed Once, and it earned praise from critics at TIFF. Variety gave it a positive review, noting that the answer to the film’s title question is “yes.”
Knightley plays a singer/songwriter who travels to the U.S. with her boyfriend, played by Maroon 5 singer Levine. But he runs off with a record executive and soon Knightley finds her own record executive, played by Ruffalo. He’s impressed by the painful song she wrote about her relationship and she starts to put her life back together.
According to Deadline, the project drew attention from several key distributors, but when the bidding reached $7 million, some had to drop out. TWC and Lionsgate were the last ones standing, with TWC ultimately winning out with around $7 million and committing $20 million to promotion and advertising.
“This movie has been an absolute joy to work on and we are thrilled to have the absolute perfect distributor in The Weinstein Company join us on the journey,” producer Anthony Bregman of Likely Story said in a statement, notes ComingSoon.net. The film was produced by Bregman with Exclusive Media's Tobin Armbrust.
TWC did not announce a release date for the film, but it will be interesting to see if they decide to put it out before the end of the year so it qualifies for the Oscars.
