Lauryn Hill will be released from prison on Friday after serving a 3-month sentence for tax evasion and she’s celebrating the occasion by releasing a new single.
The song is called "Consumerism,” and in it, she sings about "corporate greed in Jesus’ name," as well as "compromised commercialism.”
Rolling Stone reports now that Hill has her legal problems mostly behind her, she can look forward to her new deal with Sony and releasing a new album.
She was convicted of tax evasion for failing to file income taxes on more than $2 million in income from 2005-2007. She responded to the charges in a lengthy post on Tumblr, blaming it on “hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism.”
She wrote, “My intention has always been to get this situation rectified. When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes. This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family.”
