Cable Car is a Los Angeles-based band that loves to describe their musical style as “new vintage” and “tragic sexy.” And it surely is. Their Ride EP is permeated with sexy, soulful tracks, as well as those reminiscent of the oldies, but with a modern twist.
Nathan Mott (vocals), Jack Turner (guitar), and Ryan Murphy (drums) have met back in 2012 in a Los Angeles apartment complex. The band summed up the creation of the trio in few simple sentences. “Nate and Ryan flew from Rhode Island. Jack flew from England. They landed in Los Angeles. Had a few laughs, had a few drinks, and hopped on a Cable Car.”
And boy, aren’t we glad that the destiny brought them together! Because Ride happened!
The EP features soulful tracks, such as “Two.Time.Love,” “Songs That Groove” and “You’re Killing Me” composed of sexy, seductive, clear, groovy guitars that are at the moments reminiscent of a romantic Spanish guitar and accompanied by distinctive, sensual, soulful vocals.
Then on the other hand we have “It’s You,” a sweet romantic, sunshiny, love ballad with emotional piano and guitars, and sentimental, dreamy, breathy vocals. The song has the feel of a careless summer day and carries all the lightness of a heart and soul in love. It is a track worthy of a romance movie.
And then the surprise comes in form of “Wait For Me.”
An instrumentally interesting and quite complex track with feet-stomping rhythm, hovering, Spaghetti Western guitars, Dylan-esque harmonica section, heart-beat-like drums, weeping violins and soft, sentimental, at moments whispering vocals. By the end there is a short pause where my heart stops and then a drum beat leads into an emotional outpour.
Overall, Ride is a sensual journey that will slowly seduce you by being emotionally bare and very provocative.
