Following the success of Marvel and now D.C. creating cross over comic book universes it appears that Sony Pictures will be following in their footsteps. Sony Pictures has announced plans to create more Spider-Man films and even spinoff films.

Sony Picture Entertainment chief Michael Lynton discussed the new universe in a recent Q&A session. “We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man. There are a number of scripts in the works,” explained Lynton.

Lynton also hinted at the fact that Disney and Marvel have been working very closely with Sony.

Sony owns the rights to Marvel for Spider-Man, which allows the studio to create any character within the superhero’s universe-including villains and girlfriends. The studio could even create a story-surrounding Aunt May, Deadline reported.

Disney owns the merchandising rights to Spider-Man and those related characters.

Entertainment Weekly added that the first Spider-Man franchise with 2002 Tobey Maguire made over $1 billion dollars. The reboot which featured Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man made over $262 million domestically.

With how the character rights are set up, it is not likely that Spider-Man would ever join the Avenger universe that has been created by Disney/Marvel.

The next installment of the rebooted franchise of Spider-Man is set to be released in May 2, 2014.
