There will definitely be an R rated version of Fifty Shades of Grey, but producer Dana Brunetti suggested that there is the possibility of releasing an NC-17 version into theaters afterwards.
The Fifty Shades of Grey producer talked to Collider about how the movie would handle the explicit sex scenes. Brunetti said, "It'll be R, obviously it has to be R."
The movie producer added, "This is just my opinion and this doesn't mean this is going to happen, but I always thought it would be really cool if we released the R version and then we had an NC-17 version that we released a few weeks later."
The producer said that way more people could enjoy the R rated version and then those who wanted "a little bit more gritty" could see it again in NC-17 form. He also slid in how it would be good for the studio as it would allow them to "double dip at the box office."
Variety reports that Brunetti says that fans have been asking for the film to be as close to the book as possible.
"What we're kind of hearing from the fans is they want it dirty, they want it as close as possible [to the book]." The producer added, "We want to keep it elevated but also give the fans what they want."
