Baz Luhrmann’s visual spectacle The Great Gatsby may not be in the running for any of the top awards at the Oscars, but the Australian equivalent is sure to give the Australian native’s latest film several awards. The movie earned 14 nominations from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts’ awards.
Gatsby, which was released by Warner Bros. in May, was nominated for the Best Film Award. It is the most well-known project in the bunch outside of Australia, as the other nominees are The Rocket, Mystery Road, Satellite Boy, The Turning and Dead Europe.
Luhrmann was also nominated for Best Director and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan were nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. Elizabeth Debicki and Isla Fisher will both compete for Best Supporting Actress and Joel Edgerton was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
The Rocket does stand a chance at getting attention in the U.S. as it will compete for an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category. According to Deadline, the film earned 12 nominations. It was directed by Kim Mordaunt.
“It's not really a competition because they are two such different films - not only in terms of budget,” The Rocket producer Sylvia Wilczynski told News.com.au about competing with Gatsby. “But it's exciting to be up there with such incredible filmmakers and craftsmen.”
The AACTA also honors television and Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake earned the most nominations with 10. The awards are handed out during ceremonies on Jan. 28 and Jan. 30.
