A Harvard student has been arrested in relation to the bomb threats to the school on Monday that caused the evacuation of four buildings.
Eldo Kim, 20, allegedly sent emails to the university police and the Harvard Crimson with the subject line “bombs placed around campus.”
“Shrapnel bombs placed in science center, sever hall, emerson hall, thayer hall, 2/4,” Kim reportedly wrote in the email according to the NY Daily News. “guess correctly. be quick for they will go off soon.”
Both emails were sent around 8 in the morning and caused chaos on campus and led to the cancellation of finals. All four buildings were put on lockdown while police searched the campus for evidence of a bomb. The lockdown was lifted around 2:50 p.m. after no bomb evidence was found.
There are different programs that allowed Kim to hide his email identity when the sending the threats.
Kim was at Emerson Hall to take his final exam at 9 a.m. Monday when the fire alarm went off. "According to KIM, upon hearing the alarm, he knew that his plan had worked,” read the affidavit.
Cops suspected Kim of the hoax by late Monday evening and Kim reportedly confessed to the crime.
“We are aware that a member of our community has been arrested in relation to this matter and are saddened by the details alleged in the criminal complaint filed by the United States Attorney’s office today,” reported the Harvard Crimson on Tuesday.
Kim is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court on Wednesday. Kim faces a maximum five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine if charged.
